Dr. Nelson and Dr. Poivre taking advantage of kid-friendly didactics
Dr. Nelson and Dr. Poivre taking advantage of kid-friendly didactics to learn, have some family time, and show off their kiddos.

Resident Seminars

Each Tuesday afternoon, residents have dedicated learning time to attend a half day of didactics. A three-year curriculum covers the broad scope of core family medicine topics, including sports medicine, POCUS, procedures (suturing, toenail removal, circumcisions, skin biopsies), public health, and quality improvement. The third Tuesday of the month is devoted to a Theme Day during which one key area is explored in depth. Each Theme Day has a case-based lecture, a procedure workshop, three interactive stations and Board Review.

Grand Rounds

Each Wednesday, Grand Rounds is held over the noon hour. Faculty members from our department and the medical school and third year residents present cutting edge clinical topics.

BEST Medicine

Building Expertise in Stress Tolerance occurs instead of resident lectures on the fifth Tuesday of the month and is designed to enhance resident wellness. The resident-led wellness committee continues to adapt to the residents needs and evolve our curriculum based on feedback.

AGOTA

Airing of Grievances on a Tuesday Afternoon (AGOTA) is a long-standing tradition that occurs after didactics. Residents organize a weekly social event to get together outside of the hospital and support each other. Some AGOTAs have been going out to favorite restaurants, hosting potlucks, playing pickle ball, or going for a hike!

Department Book Club

  • Residents and faculty meet together quarterly to enjoy food and discuss relevant literature with varying topics.
  • We often include a book with a relevant podcast in order to include those with busy schedules!

OB Journal Club

  • Residents are involved in reading and presenting new and informative obstetrics research
  • Meets four times a year

Inpatient Journal Club

Hosted by our inpatient attendings to discuss changing inpatient practices and critically review new research regarding inpatient medicine. This club meets three times a year.

FCM pie activityWellness Committee

  • This resident-driven committee oversees organizing fundraisers, developing wellness curriculum, scheduling AGOTA, and working with administration to promote resident appreciation.
  • Our most popular event is the “Operation Pie-fection” which occurs at our Residency Retreat. Donations from both faculty and residents determines which attendings will get pie’d in the face!
  • Advocacy Committee – uniting residents interested in public health and advocacy work to improve health locally and nationally.

FCM Christmas photoResident and Attending Socials

  • Faculty and residents gather quarterly at “mixers” designed to promote a supportive and fun work environment.
  • Some favorites are Dr. Cronk’s Bonfire, Dr. Ringdahl’s Ugly Sweater Holiday Party, and Valentine Cookie Decorating!
